Penn State offers a variety of graduate courses and other professional development opportunities designed to meet the continuing education goals of educators and teachers.
We provide the most up-to-date professional development and educational experience for our area, covering topics such as educational technology integration, classroom management, inclusion and differentiated instruction, special education, and more.
We are an approved provider of Act 48 continuing education credits.
Scranton programs:
Postbaccalaureate Credit Courses for Educators
Penn State University is an approved provider for both credit courses and noncredit programs. Our diverse offerings, locations, and delivery modes will help you meet Act 48 requirements while satisfying your learning and lifestyle needs. The University serves many educators across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with diverse courses ranging from workshops to in-class instruction. Many of these courses are offered for college credit. Other courses may not qualify for college credit, but do qualify for Act 48 development.
A program endorsement indicates knowledge in new and emerging areas where formal certification does not exist. An endorsement program is intended to improve an educator’s skills in dealing with complex educational issues. An endorsement is added to a teacher’s existing Level I or Level II certification.
The MCE consists of 12 credits, and can be taken alone or in conjunction with the Master of Education in Teaching and Curriculum or the Principal’s Certification program.

Remote Teaching: Tools, Tips, and Hints
This four-hour workshop was designed to help educators meet the exceptional challenges they are facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The class will provide basic skills in tools any educator can use right away for remote teaching. Delivered via Zoom videoconferencing.
Postbaccalaureate Credit Courses for Educators
Does your school district require you to pursue professional development? Are you looking for Act 48 credits in your educational focus? Penn State is an approved Act 48 provider, and our postbaccalaureate courses cover a wide range of current topics in education. Courses are delivered remotely through a combination of classes via Zoom and online assignments.
Teaching Writing and Literacy Certificate
The Writing Specialist Certificate is designed to afford educators deep study in all aspects of teaching literacy. It provides the teacher with real-world skills for implementing the writing requirements of the PA Core Standards.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
The English as a Second Language Certificate (ESL) offers an innovative program for educators who wish to be ESL-certified instructors in Pennsylvania. Upon completion of this accelerated 15-credit (5 course) certificate program, you will have gained 15 credits towards a PDE Instruction Level II certification and satisfied PA Act 48 requirements.
M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum
The core courses of Penn State Harrisburg’s 30-credit Master of Education in Teaching and Curriculum are delivered online. Many of our education courses transfer into that program, so why not sign up for one today and get a jump on your Master’s?
